Microsoft Xbox 360: Extinction of the HD-DVD

Could the rumors that Blu-ray is the replacement for HD-DVD be true? Read more to learn what could change your ideas on purchasing DVDs this year.

Since the beginning, man has always sought for a source of entertainment. The year is 2008 and it's been three decades since the 'Videotape format war.' After the growth of the DVD and the steroids its been taking, there existed two counterparts; Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

The Console "Format" War
For decades there have been lots of format wars. And in most cases some products beat out the others. But this is one format war that will never be forgotten. The first HD-DVD player was released in March of 2006. Three months later, the Blu-ray player was released. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD were deemed as two new optical storage technologies that clash as the successors of DVD. But between the two titans, who is the winner? Do we determine by its status quo or do we indicate it by what happened afterwards? I really do think that Blu-ray has won. Not only because of its popularity, but it's also on a gaming system; the Playstation 3. Yes, Xbox 360 has the HD-DVD player but you have to pay an extra arm and a leg for the add on. Giving a limb to earn a limb is what I call it and nobody wants to do that. Right?

The Playstation 3 on the other hand is great because it automatically comes with a Blu-ray player installed in the console. Playstation 3 might be pricey but you get more than what the 360 has to offer. The only thing PS3 has to worry about is their games and apps. Otherwise, HD-DVD is on the brink of extinction.

Let's compare between the twain shall we?

As you can see the Playstation 3 has more features than the Xbox 360. So it wins. But what about Blu-ray and HD-DVD players you ask? Well since Blu-ray is rounding up all the different technology companies such as Dell, Apple, or Panasonic, HD-DVD is also going to be extinct in the DVD world as well. Warner Bros officially ordered HD-DVD to be discontinued after its campaign is over which is on June 1st of this year. Sorry HD and Xbox 360 owners. Looks like you're gonna have to buy a PS3 or a regular Blu-ray player.

But why compete? Whats the point?!
Really, why compete? Why couldn't all the systems support both DVD versions? I mean it might be extra money to buy the system but wouldn't it make it easier on people who can't afford Blu-ray DVDs? It makes a whole lot of sense. But when you look at it this way it seems like they don't care what the customers want. They're creating this stuff but not at least surveying and seeing what John Q. Public wants. I know what I want and I want a Playstation 3 that is powerful and supports all three medias; DVD, Blu-ray, and HD-DVD.

I guess we're gonna have to suck it up and wait until the next gaming generation or the next DVD media. I currently weep for 2008. Really, I do. Maybe Playstation 4 will be better? Who knows. It's finally 2008. A year that's promising of new tech and gadgets. But what about DVDs in general? Would they and one of its successors, the HD-DVD, go extinct?  Possibly, if the HD-DVD is going to die (big chance it will) then this is your last chance to choose which type of media you want: Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Choose wisely because you won't be able to make the choice ever again. Kinda like selling your soul or something, right? The DVD companies are out to buy your souls!

In my opinion Blu-Ray is Top Choice for Hi-def DVD media.
What do you think GF members?

Is Blu-ray the best DVD on the market in your opinion?
Yes!
I'm neutral.
Hell no!
Who cares?
