Microsoft Xbox 360: Interview with LGD

Robert Rodriguez had a chance to sit down with Fiber0ptix, a member of Team LGD, winners of the first MLG Gamestop $5,000 Gears of War online tournament.

This interview was conducted online, with DPAD's Robert Rodriguez (questions asked in black bold).

First and foremost, congratulations on winning MLG Gamestop's first Gears of War Online Tournament!

Looking at your record, one would think that you rolled through this tournament. At which point during the MLG Gamestop tournament did you realize that you were a top tier team?

When we came out of the group play we knew we had a battle ahead of us. We were going to face a lot of teams that had host advantage over us. pA was a very good match, I could say that it was the best match in the entire tournament. I think after we beat pA and took the 1st seed we were confident that we could win the whole thing. Our team work helped us in the end.

What was your daily practice schedule like?

To be honest with you we didn't practice all too much.  1 of our team mates was busy with life stuff so we ran 3's a lot and when he could get on we practiced as much as we could. I played about 10 hours a day.

Do you think that the host has an advantage over the other players? And if so, how? Do you feel it affected you during your matches, and how did you take advantage of it?

YES! Host advantage is almost everything in online play, its like that for almost all online games tho. We shut the host down in many ways. First we would make sure not to choose host maps (Maps where the host can dominate the field). 2nd we picked maps that we felt we had the strongest amount of team work on. Our strats also were based around guarding power weapons that the host would most likely pick up. If we had 1 player able to shoot the host down at a power weapon, the host would not be able to pick it up therefore buying us time to come around and execute a rush towards the host to pick up that power weapon on certain maps.

Your finals match against High Council came down to the last map, Fuel Depot. While this is a fairly even map, your team was off-host, giving High Council the advantage from the start. What was going through your team's minds before the match?

We were thinking about how much we needed to win. The previous day (Wednesday) we played HC+ on their host and got 4 rounds each map on their server. We were confident that we could beat them. Fuel Depot is not as much of a host advantage map as say Gridlock or War Machine is.

Do you feel that Gears of War will become as popular other console first person shooter games such as Halo 2 down the road, or is this just a fad and will eventually die out?

You know it's very hard to say. I don't know if this game will take off. Gears has a huge community but if MLG doesn't pick GoW up i know a lot of people are going to leave the game. I'm sure the Gears community will still be strong considering the fact that WCG, CAL, and other major gaming leagues already picked Gears up. It could be as big as Halo 2, it's too early to say. Gears won't die out.

Your team is listed as pending on the Buy.com Gears of War Tournament list. Do you think it's too early for this game to be on the competitive LAN scene due to its many faults?

I think Gears is still a very skill based and strong game. The game is about 10 times as fun and takes 10 times more skill on LAN. Gears was meant to be a LAN game. I think its time for everyone to see this game on LAN. How much fun it can really be. Plus Cliffy B has already stated that more game types and more maps will be coming out in the future.

If you were to release a patch for Gears of War, what would be in this patch to better the game for competitive play?

I would take the objects that move out of the game completely. The bottles on Fuel Depot make jumping down the ledge near the boom shot almost impossible. I would also take away some of the chainsaw glitches. If i could i would create different game types like say a CTF game or a game where when you get downed you stay down for a certain amount of time before getting up. I would include longer invincibility when getting revived by a teammate also.

Thanks for your time. Any last shoutouts or comments?

Nope that's it. Thank you.
