Smashing zombies with cash registers? Running over hoards of the undead and beating them with golf clubs? We take a look at the game that has sold over 1 million copies on the 360.
Publisher: Capcom Genre: Action Mode: Single player Rating: ESRB: Mature 17+ (M) Platform: Xbox 360 Dead Rising Gallery Capcom was dying, slowly slipping into the darkness or so it seemed. Apparently, Capcom had only been bitten by a supercharged zombie and was transforming. The company is now on the upswing and it’s all thanks to the greatest game they have ever designed, Dead Rising. This Dawn of the Dead meets Grand Theft Auto impresses with gameplay, re-playability, and graphics. When I first heard the concept of the game the thought of “rent it, don’t buy it” automatically entered my head, as did the memories of previous games such as State of Emergency. Fortunately, I just turned another year older and gift cards were in abundant supply, so I figured why not. After I picked it up I couldn't put it down. My original doubts were shattered. From cash registers smashing faces, to decapitating saw blades and plywood, to the ever popular shotgun, every kill is a new and exciting adventure. Your character is a photojournalist too, so you can take pictures and relive your gruesome adventure over and over. While playing the game, I learned there is more to it then just random zombie killing, there’s actually a storyline too. You’re a photojournalist flown in to cover the story of a zombie breakout, in a small South Western city. You run into a bunch a people including two federal agents that are trying to catch the terrorist responsible, yeah a little cliché; but “if it ain’t broke…” The people and agents give the character’s placement in the story a sense of purpose so it goes from killing zombies to killing zombies to rescue Leah or killing zombies so Brad can get to the terrorist. Plus, besides the good, there are also all sorts of psychos that rather just kill you, so it adds a little challenge and well placed frustration. After killing submissive zombies, humans can be a little more challenging. That said, remember this simple adage: bullets and humans don’t mix. |
