I always knew in the back of my mind that gamestop sucked, but the other day I had an experience that made me want to never ever buy anything from them again. in preparation for resident evil 5, I went to trade in a few games I don't play anymore - forza 2, marvel ultimate alliance, lost planet, fifa 07, and other games of the like. I must have traded in like, at least 8-9 games and received $24 in credit. now, I know you're saying "well of course, those games suck and are old" and that's very true. but it's not true of dead space or fable 2 which I also traded in.
at any rate, I got 2-4 dollars in credit for all of these games on the average, and looked around in the store long enough to watch the employees re-tag the games with prices of $55 and higher. I've heard the stories of how gamestop buys games for $5 or $10 then resells them at $5 off the new price, but this is ridiculous. watching the game collect dust on a pile of other games is worth more than $5. and all it does is help gamestop corner the used games market further than they already have, causing terrible deals for everyone in the gaming community aside from themselves.
when will the madness stop?

gamestop barely makes any money from selling new games. their entire business model revolves around selling used games. when digital distribution becomes the norm, gamestop will die.
Yea, when I sold my DS/PSP I went through Craigslist and made $30-$40 more than I would have should I went the GameStop route. I know it's annoying, but they're a business and they have to make money somehow.
Sometimes you get good deals though. Two days ago I went when they were having 40% trade in bonus credit and I traded in my Smash Bros. Brawl which qualified for that deal. Got $26 back for that alone; combined with the other three I traded in I got a total of $65. Just gotta do it at the right time I guess.
the only time i ever sold a game to gamestop was on black friday when they had a promo where you got like 30% more than normal, plus i had an edge card cause when i got my 360 i got it all used so it paid for itself and then 20 bucks more so i had another 10% more on top of that, i traded in gh2, pgr3, just cause, bad company, r6 vegas 2 and like 2 other games that werent that good and got 85 dollars in credit, picked up mirrors edge and 3 months of live with it
#1 You don't seem to shop at Gamestop very much. Also, you're flagrantly exaggerating.
I've only been there maybe a dozen times, and even I know FOR FACT that the only used games that get priced at $55 dollars are the ones that were only recently released (or if they're still continuing to sell really well, like Halo 3). So yeah, a used copy of Fable II might be that high. Nothing else you mention in your post would have been. The second highest would've been Dead Space, but I'm pretty sure I recall that game being about 30-ish bucks used when I was last at Gamestop.
BUT, I guess you realized that complaining about only one of your games getting re-tagged that high didn't make your story sound sympathetic enough.
P.S. You're also lying about only getting $24 in credit. You would have gotten that much from Fable II and Dead Space alone. Probably more, actually. And then the other games you mention would've netted you between 2 to 6 bucks each.
Gamestop is actually ridiculously generous. By using their used game selection, you can basically get free rentals.
At Gamestop, you have the option of returning any used game you buy from them for a FULL REFUND within seven days. And that's it. No conditions, no qualifiers. You can just say that you didn't like the game, and they consider that an acceptable reason. Actually, you don't really have to give them any reason at all. So long as you have your receipt, they couldn't care less.
And you're not really playing the system, either. A Gamestop employee was actually the one who told me to do this.
So basically, it's like putting down a de facto deposit for a game, and as long as you return the game on time, you get your deposit back. So it's even better than renting from Blockbuster or where ever, because in the end you get 100% of your cash back.
This is how I played the new Prince of Persia. People had traded in used copies of the game within a week of its release (as they always do), and I bought a used copy for about 50-ish dollars, as I recall. I beat it in a week, and then I took it back for a full refund. Easy as that.
i feel your pain, but i had a pretty bad experience but it turned pretty good with them with a little hassling. when i was 12 i went in and sold all of my gameboy games, there were about 40, i ended up getting 144 dollars worth of credit, but when i asked for cash instead they said i couldn't have it because i was a minor. i think proceeded to bring my dad back there and they tried to tell me that the registers were closed for the night at 7 o clock (lol?). They got the manager out there and he yelled at the employees and gave me 144 in cash, but forgot to take off the credit, so i had 144 dollars and 144 dollars in gamestop credit. =D
another thing is that 30% of 4 dollars is 1 dollar and 30% of 2 dollars is 65 cents (estimates) so even with 30% he still wouldnt be making crap for money
The discount applies to trade-ins AND purchases. You get a little bit more from trade-ins, and save a quite a lot on purchases (assuming you're dumb enough to buy games new).
i just keep the games even if i only play them one more time in my life that is still better than getting $5 for it which will undoubtedly go to gas or food. trading in your games is only good if you are like 15 and dont have a job, otherwise how can you justify spending $50-$70 on a game only to trade it in for $5-$8 later on? for this reason i still have all of my dreamcast games, n64 games, ps1 games etc..
Frod vs. 4Kings on cbble. One of the best POV"s I've ever seen.
Here they had a gamestop deal for anygame u are trading in towards re5 you get 40percent more for it than u usually would. I didn't read any of these comments, so if someone said it already sorry :p
GameStop is a generous company, assuming your store isn't full of a-holes.
Two of my best friends work at a GameStop together, so I spend a great deal of time there. They hardly cheat you out of anything, and as #13 said, you can basically rent from them (and if you are good friends with an employee, you can get them to use their 4-day employee rental as well :D ).
okay I work for GameStop. First of all I just traded in Fable 2 last week and it was worth $23 so you're full of crap. Secondly, when you don't make profit off of new games, you have to stay in business somehow. Plus, we have a trade deal going right now that gives you an additional 40% on your trade-ins if you trade 6 or more games. Plus 10% if you had an edge card would make that Fable 2 worth more than what you claim to have gotten for your "8 or 9" games alone. Also, of course we don't pay you well for sports titles... There's a new one by the same developer EVERY YEAR. If you don't like what we give you in store credit then don't trade your stuff in to us but to come on GotFrag and complain just like so many other people do on stupid internet blogs about it is just dumb. Understand how a business runs and how Corporate America is and just deal with it. Plus, you don't have "8 or 9" games sitting around taking up space either. Hell, we even have a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale going on right now that also stacks with the 10% Edge Card so you can take your old crap games in and get a whole bunch of stuff.......................................
#24 "Secondly, when you don't make profit off of new games, you have to stay in business somehow." "Understand how a business runs and how Corporate America is and just deal with it."
so what you're saying is that you have to rip people off to stay in business. lol, how stupid. you act like gamestop has to exist--it doesn't. gamestop isn't the only place to buy and sell games from and it doesn't bring anything unique or give any sort of real incentive for choosing them over say buying/selling stuff online or from, for example, target.
anyway, this guy is probably lying about what he got for his games. in the end, if he really did get the prices he's claiming, it was his stupid fault for going through with the deal. it's not as if he HAD to do it.

Only thing GameStop brings to the table, at least in my town, is a wide array of used games on sale. Sure, they rip off the person who traded it in, but when you go in there you pretty much know what to expect. COD:MW is still $55 used, but hey, that's $5 back in my pocket.
#27 you are an idiot. When they tell you the trade-in price, and you do not agree with it but still trade it in, you are ripping yourself off.
When I read the statement you quoted, I did not infer that he meant GameStop had to rip people off, I read it as GameStop built their business model to make money, which is what every business does. Now if they bought back used games, repackaged them, and sold them as new, THAT would be ripping you off. What they do is completely legit.
Blockbuster also buys used game from customers.. i should know i work there. My co worker looks up titles that he finds at target on clearance for 6.99-15.99 etc and will trade them in for 20-35 dollars store credit. He bought some monster truck game for like 7 dollars and traded it in for 32 dollars, because our store did not carry the game anymore. On a random note, why people pay $5.38 to rent a dvd is beyond me.
nobody rents movies for $5 anymore thats why your shitty company is going bankrupt. i just use those red machines in the entrance of walmart. it's a dollar a night and they have blurayzzzz
Uhm, I goto gamestop alot to buy used games... genereally there very reasonable.... 5-15 bucks for games not even that old... They also tell you how much you get for each game... I wouldn't have traded in any of the games you traded in and just coughed up the extra doe for RE5... but thats just me
no, they wont. target, walmart, bestbuy, etc are going to be just fine after dd takes over. GAMESTOP will die, because they only make profit off of software. i dont understand the point you're trying to make.
#36 not entirely true. A lot of people do not use the internet to purchase games because they either do not trust it [the internet], they don't have it, or it takes to long to get games via shipping. We take online reservations now through GameStop.com and when we first started I thought we'd stop getting reservations as heavy in our store but in reality out of every 100 reservations we get, maybe 5 of them are online reserves.......................... Now I know that isn't the same as digital distribution at all but it'll be the same result. Plus, trade-ins will still be popular with us as well as the Wii system still being ridiculously popular in the older crowd (we're talking women and men ages 45 all the way to 90).
on a side note... I sold a woman and her arm-less mother a Wii and Wii Fit yesterday. That was pretty cool that she was trying to help her mom out.
Its not my sh!tty company, i have no stake in it, nor do i give a crap about it. The company is still turning a profit by the way. They will go out of business within the next 5 years no doubt because netflix is/will be superior in every way.
I recently bought COD: World at War for the PS3 (shitty) and want credit back for it, but they won't take a game that's opened, however the receipt says I can get the identical game should I want to. Could I return it, get the identical game in the casing and then return it back a day later for full credit?
Last time I traded in games at Gamestop I got $70 back. I only traded in three PS3 titles and like 5 old PS2 titles. I was happy since no one buys used games on ebay.
I have to give you credit though #41 because you actually read the receipt. Unfortunately, whoever the employee is who does the return is required to cut open the plastic on exchange, though some people will forget because they're stupid or part-timers....

lol, you are going to hate everything corporate USA stands for when you're a little older mate ;0
Really though, even when you sell rare games to gamestop, you can sell them for a lot more on craigs / ebay.
I bought prince of persia, mirrors edge and MK vs DC all for $20 each used at a video store. took them in and got $100 credit
if I was smarter, I woulda bought all 6 copies of prince of persia they had and doubled my money in credit lolol
