If you're worried about overheating, the most important thing to remember is that it should not be in an enclosed space, such as in a small glass space in an entertainment center that is completely enclosed. I'm not aware of any issues from having it on its side or standing up for prolonged periods. Mine stood up for about a year and has been on its side since.

Yeah I have one of those stands for it to sit on which blows air up into it and it was on my desk but I got the RRoD but I'm thinking it's from my friend moving it to play on my other TV then bringing back with the game inside, if that's a possible reason for the RRoD Idk but it just doesn't seem like it had any reason to overheat besides being a 360, it was a 2005 gen though so hey.
I keep mine on its side cause my dad's girlfriend knocked it over and haloed my oblivion disc and fked my reader, so I am just paranoid and leave it laying down.
on its side :-) in case of another rock band gathering we wont have another "mistake" where the system gets knocked over and u hear ur disc getting demolished
for me its neither lol, my 360 is very irregular (its actually my friends but i did everything for it, paid me 100$ to do it, but my own is on its side) but anyway, he allowed me to take it apart carefully and put it into a regular computer case (microatx case) and it has liquid cooling, some LED's on it, 2 120mm fans, and a 90mm fan, so it'l be very hard to get the red ring of doom, and its been working perfect for about 2 years now, so i hope it'll stay like that.
#7 Did you slap the sh** out of her? I would have lol. Anyways, I have mine standing up, but I don't have to worry about people knocking it over like #7, #9, and #10.
I kept mine stood up beside my bad little tv, then moved it to my computer monitor and due to restricted space it had to be on the side.
if there's room I'd rather have it on the side. I tripped over the ethernet cable running from my PC to the 360 and it tilted my 360 which scratched my copy of NHL08 to the point it was unplayable.
360 Placement
Does your 360 stand up or sit on it's side? And does it really matter which as long as there's room around it?
Or if you have my luck sit in a white box most of the time.
