"Microsoft announced today that the first map pack for Halo 3 will arrive on Dec. 11 as part of the Heroic Map Pack, the first in a series of downloadable content from Bungie Studios to come via Xbox Live. Available for 800 Microsoft Points, each map presents a totally different play style:
Standoff’s symmetrical valley, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types, while Rat’s Nest’s vast, labyrinthine passages bring something new to the “Halo” multiplayer experience: an indoor vehicle paradise, strongly influenced by the Campaign mode, ideal for big team battles. Finally, Foundry is the ultimate Forge map – players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, place stairways, walls, bridges and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map they can think of.
All three maps will become available for free download via Xbox Live Marketplace in Spring 2008, just prior to the next wave of all new “Halo 3” multiplayer maps."

why would they not bring back Midship? Ascension? I know guardian is supposed to be lockout but its no where near as good as lockout... bring back the orig maps..
xbox live downloadable content is great, however, it inadvertently encourages developers to release unfinished games. I swear bungie thought to themselves, "hey, we can make quite a bit of money if we take out some of the multiplayer maps and release the game. then, after the players get bored of playing the same five map rotation, we can release a map pack over xbox live that they must pay for in order to continue playing the most popular playlist. that way, we turn an ever larger profit."
good for the companies, bad for the consumer.

Not really when you think in business sense. Bungie knows the majority of their consumers are willing to pay for their product, so they charge for it and make a profit. The smart consumers (the minority) saves their money and eventually gets said product for free. Just think of the actual map pack release as this spring.
Just don't simplify the whole situation and think they're trying to screw you, we get the maps for free in the end and we don't have to play on a special playlist to play them. :D
