I used to build my own computers for years, but I tend to go with pre built now a days, because I feel my time is woth more than I save. The savings of a pre built over a Dell or others are negligible at this time. You MIGHT save $100 on the difference between the two. Not to mention having 20 different places to warranty any problems you have where as with a pre-built, anything goes wrong and one number to call.
dells are about statistics, not quality. you get 2gb or ram and a 300gb hard drive. but what kind are they? the 300gb hard drive is a 5400rpm and the ram is crappy. people see large numbers and the low cost, and get a dell. most of the things in dells are no-name brand items, unless dell is trying to retail a high quality thing in a computer like a raptor hard drive. in other words, emo > dell. my ~$750 gets me 177 in hardware test with a standard competitive config.

He was wearing Blue jeans and a black golf shirt while we were there for the roundtable
