Nintendo Wii: To Wii or Not to Wii?

To buy, or not to buy. That, is the question. Kind of..

The Sum of All Wii's

Everyone has either came across someone trying to purchase a Wii at some point or it could even be yourself, but let's see if purchasing a Wii is actually worth it. The availability, the value, the game selection, and more importantly, how long you intend to buy the games and stay true to the Nintendo Wii.

Is it worth it? (To buy)

What exactly creates all the buzz for the Nintendo Wii? The games? The looks? The gameplay?
We all know that when Nintendo comes to mind, we are reminded of all the greatness they've brought to us: Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Metroid, the list can go on and on. Nintendo has already thought ahead and incorporated these hit game icons into next gen material, such as the highly anticipated upcoming title: Super Smash Bros.: Brawl, Metroid: Prime 3: Corruption, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. All of these games have an incredibly large fanbase that draws users into buying the Wii. Some say it's a form of fanboyism, but we all know a gamer that's older then 16 has played at least one of those three games in some form or another through an older Nintendo system. The Wii also comes standard with full backwards compatibility so playing older titles are not a problem.

It seems to me that the Nintendo Wii is honestly worth it, it has a way cheaper price than the PS3 and the 360, and has strong solid features to be different enough and stand on its own. Whenever I had friends over, we would have just as much fun on the Wii than we did on the PS3 and 360, but I've noticed that we were a lot more laid-back than maniacally trying to kill each other in Halo 2. Being able to play competitively without the actual strain of competition just might be the strongest feature when playing with the Nintendo Wii.

Is it worth it? (To not buy)

The first things gamers see when they look at the Wii is its Wii Remote and the Nunchuk. Many original gamers and some new gamers go: "what the hell?" when they see this. They take Nintendo's bold move as a sort of stupidity. I've ran into a few gamers who just don't give any respect to the Wii. It has an untraditional funky controller, the hardware used isn't able to compete with the PS3 and 360, and the game selection isn't as appealing to some people. Using a combination of built-in accelerometers and infrared detection to sense its position in 3D space when pointed at the LEDs might sound cool to some gamers, but there's a whole gang who think it's just stupid and unneeded. Although half of those people are just scared of their self-image getting deteriorated when people see them swinging a white stick in their hands.

She's smiling, but you know she's embarassed.

The hardware could be another big issue with non-Wii fans, seeing as a majority of gamers like to enjoy video games while indulging themselves within surreal graphics and physics. A major amount of gamers stand by saying it's about things like gameplay and storyline and not graphics, but nowadays, wouldn't it be time to enjoy both at the same time? I mean I personally wouldn't want to play a game like Madden with gaping fissures of nothingness under a players armpits when I look at the replay of my game winning touchdown. Then comes good ol'  game selection. Many people think the Wii is not worth the money it is because of this. So far we have seen some good titles come back and we can expect some good games to be released for the Wii in 2008, but why do people think the Wii's game selection is not as exciting as the 360's or PS3's? Well, the majority of gamers seem to be attracted to the more action-oriented games, whether it be competitive or not. These include but are not limited to: Dead of Alive 4, Mass Effect, Kane & Lynch, Assassins Creed, and Halo 3.
