Publisher: Nintendo Platform: Wii Genre: First-person action-adventure Number of Players: 1 Release Date: August 20 of 2007 Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Gallery Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is currently under development by Retro Studios, a company founded in 1998 with many cancelled games and only a few finished titles. Most completed games are in the Metroid Prime series. Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime Hunters, and so on. The Metroid Prime games were undoubtedly some of the best the GameCube had to offer with their slick graphics, intriguing plots, and good gameplay. Which seems to be the case with Corruption. The story of Corruption looks to be very engaging much like the earlier games in the Metroid Prime series. Six months after the events have occurred on planet Aether, the Galactic Federation's computer network, Aurora Unit, has been corrupted by a virus. The Federation believes Space Pirates are responsible for this new major problem. After Samus attains this knowledge she begins to contact bounty hunters from across the universe. As the situation is being explained to the assembled bounty hunters, the Federation is suddenly attacked by Space Pirates. Samus and the others attempt to defend the capital of the Federation, but quickly find out that the enemy hunter is the thought to be dead Dark Samus. It soon becomes apparent that Dark Samus has immense power and none of the hunters can withstand it. It also seems that the forces controlling Dark Samus are powerful enough to threaten the corruption of the universe itself. The material Phazon, from the previous Prime games, will also play an important part in the storyline of Corruption as well. In an interview with the games director, Mark Pacini, he stated that "The idea behind the title is that in Prime 1 and Prime 2 we used Phazon as a way to explain what was happening on each planet. In Prime 1, the planet was corrupted by Phazon and in Prime 2, Phazon caused the world to split into two. In Metroid Prime 3, we're trying to explain what the origins of Phazon were and its culmination of what this is all about. It's not only a story element, the Phazon and corruption happen on a planetary scale, but it also happens in a gameplay sense as well. Samus herself gets corrupted by Phazon and actually begins to develop abilities based on that Phazon. So that's kind of why the game is titled Corruption. You yourself are being corrupted by that material." By far the biggest fault in any of the Metroid Prime games was in Echoes. Echoes had solid graphics, a riveting story, great weapons, and nice gameplay. It seemed to have it all until you had a friend or two over and tried out the multiplayer. The multiplayer was boring, repetitive, and with the game pretty much aiming for you, it took very little skill. Recently, the release date of Corruption was pushed back and the major reason for its delay seems to be the attempted improvement of the multiplayer. Which makes it look like Retro is doing its best to succeed where it once failed. Unlike the earlier games in the series Corruption will not have an interchangeable beam system, instead the system will be stackable, meaning it will be much like the ones in the early Metroid games. Although Retro is keeping the others secret, a few visors have been confirmed. One of the new visors uses X-Ray vision which can be used in conjunction with a new beam that fires through walls. Another allows for remote control over Samus's gunship which can be summoned in combat to clear obstacles. The controls of Corruption, the biggest part of any Wii game, were fairly clumsy at first, but Retro buckled down and put plenty of time and effort into making them as precise and responsive as possible. They have been compared a number of times to PC FPS controls making it quite exciting to see how the final product will come out in terms of handling. Although the game is still far away from release, it has had already had plenty of hype. When the game was shown at the last E3 in 2006, it looked graphically similar to Metroid Prime 2. However, Retro Studios promises that the game will look much more refined and polished upon its release, running at around 60 fps. In addition to the slew of new things being added to the game, Corruption will be the first game in the Metroid series with full voice acting, finally giving a true voice to the twenty year old series of Metroid. Metroid Prime 3:Corruption has also been confirmed to be the last game in the home-console trilogy. The final release date of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is currently set for . |
