Nintendo Wii: Wii on Norwegian Cruise Lines

As demand for the Wii grows the gaming giant Nintendo is partnering to have its consoles placed on cruise ships.
Apple positioned its iPod well in pop culture and used that success to lead auto manufacturers to place iPod compatible systems in 30% of all new automobiles, and even has partnered with airlines for hookups. Nintendo is using a similar strategy and now has partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line. The Wii is being featured in the newest ship in the fleet, the Norwegian Pearl. The rest of the fleet will be fully stocked with Wii consoles by next month.

Of the partnership, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) had to say, "With its active, engaging and inviting game experiences appealing to every age from kids to parents to grandparents, the Wii from Nintendo is a natural fit for Freestyle Cruising," said Colin Veitch, NCL's president and CEO. "With the addition of Wii to our on-board activities, we can now offer bowling, boxing, golf, tennis and baseball across the entire fleet. Cheering, yelling and high-fives will be highly encouraged."

For Nintendo this is an obvious win as well. Naturally, those who have disposable income enough to take cruise vacations are potential Wii purchasers. Having the Wii on cruise ships allows stir-crazy gamers a chance to do some gaming and even get their parents involved, further building the brand recognition of the system.

"Millions of people around the world continue to discover the fun of playing Wii with their friends and families," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Norwegian Cruise Line is a great partner, as they offer us direct access to non-traditional gamers. Our partnership reinforces how Wii's social phenomenon continues to grow, from the centerpiece of gaming parties, to a workout supplement, to a fun facet of vacation cruises."

Ships will feature the consoles in atriums which will be conducive to a group experience in gaming. NCL will also feature a special Kids Zone with kid-only content for youngsters to enjoy. Special tournaments will also be organized to help entertain travelers.

#3 I know what you're saying. As someone 4 weeks away from a couple degrees, one of them in marketing, it's interesting to see the different console companies jockey for position. It also was a focus of an article written in the first edition of eSports Magazine.
