As two of video gaming's most recognizable faces, Sonic and Mario bring a lot of excitement to titles, particularly one that will feature them both.
When it comes to the Nintendo Wii there has been much to get excited about for Nintendo fans. The console has been selling out at retail locations everywhere and the interactive features of the Wii Remote that many doubted have turned out to be a resounding success. In the four months since the launch, it has become clear that the Wii has positioned itself to be the interactive, fun-based console for gamers of all ages. Because of this, games like Monkey Ball Banana Blitz and Wario Ware Smooth Moves have enjoyed great success. Now, Wii owners will have another great title to enjoy - this time with two of their favorite characters.

Mario and Sonic will be coming together on the Nintendo Wii and DS for a game based on the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," Senior Managing Director and General Manager at Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto says. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

Gaming fans often argue over attributes of different characters, and a title pitting the different classic Nintendo and Sega stars together would go a long way in dispelling some of the speculation.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title," Sega's President and Chief Operating Officer Hisao Oguchi says. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

Needless to say the title should attract a great deal of attention from classic gamers who love traditional characters as well as those who are just getting into gaming thanks to the Wii's family-friendly approach.
