As two of video gaming's most recognizable faces, Sonic and Mario bring a lot of excitement to titles, particularly one that will feature them both. Mario and Sonic will be coming together on the Nintendo Wii and DS for a game based on the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," Senior Managing Director and General Manager at Nintendo Shigeru Miyamoto says. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?" Gaming fans often argue over attributes of different characters, and a title pitting the different classic Nintendo and Sega stars together would go a long way in dispelling some of the speculation. (See DPAD's own "what if?" article here) "We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title," Sega's President and Chief Operating Officer Hisao Oguchi says. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited." Needless to say the title should attract a great deal of attention from classic gamers who love traditional characters as well as those who are just getting into gaming thanks to the Wii's family-friendly approach.
