Nintendo Wii: Wii Tops 360 Record in UK

Coming off of a huge launch in the United Kingdom, reports are in this week on just how well the Wii did.
It was more than a week ago that Nintendo unleashed its "little white box of hype" in the United Kingdom, and today we've finally got the numbers. According to MCV, a weekly gaming trade publication, Nintendo (along with ChartTrack) has confirmed that over 105,000 units were sold during the Wii's opening weekend in the UK, becoming the fastest selling home console recorded. On a related note, the Nintendo DS continued to hold strong through Wii sales, heading up the market with 110,000 handhelds sold in the same week.

Nintendo's achievement bests Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold over 70,000 units in its launch weekend. But as popular gaming blog Joystiq points out, the record weekend is really bitter sweet when all is said and done.

"Simply put, marking a record launch is almost entirely dependent on how many units you launch with. Sony can do well to beat that with the PS3 if they delay until 200,000 PS3s are available to sell in the UK," said Justin Murray of Joystiq. He would conclude: "What matters is if Nintendo can keep the Wiis flying off the shelf".

Do launch records mean anything?
Not a chance. Everything sells out at launch.
It's a strong indicator of things to come.
It's great for publicity, so yes.
