[#05] Gunstar Heroes (Genesis) Developer: Treasure Co. Ltd Publisher: Sega Original release: September, 1993 Coming in strong at #05 on our list, Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis brings you everything you want for a Virtual Console game: depth, longevity, multiplayer cooperative play, refreshing graphics and plenty of style. Being one of the best looking titles on our list doesn't mean Gunstar is a pretty boy's game. Filled to the brim with side-scrolling action (and a story! gasp!) that can only be described as everything Contra should be, you can trust fully Gunstar wont disappoint. What separates Gunstar Heroes from a lot of other similar side-scrolling action adventures is the sheer level of depth apparent in the game. Right from the get go it's clear just how deep the weapon system is (well, as deep as a side-scroller can get). Starting the game players get to choose not only their main gun, but the aiming mechanics they're most comfortable with. Select either Free Shot or Fixed Shot style, both with their own perks and drawbacks. With Free Shot players must stop to fire, but can fire in all eight directions while standing. This style of play also includes a flying kick attack, useful for its ability to be directed not only downward, but forward. Free Shot, on the other hand, is much more movement oriented. With an exclusive diving attack and the ability to move while firing, players of this type have to rely on their awareness above all else. While you may want to think about which style you want to play with for a while, don't put too much stock in the four basic shot types you can start with: Force Shot, Lightning Shot, Chaser Shot & Flame Shot - you wont be limited to what you select. In fact, one of the great things about Gunstar Heroes is the weapon combo system where you can actually fire a combination of two weapons at once, or one at a time if you so choose. If nailing baddies with rifles isn't your gig then fear not, because Gunstar also has a level of hand to hand combat. If an enemy gets too close it practically becomes your civic duty to grab him and toss him into more enemies. It's not just throwing either, players can slide tackle too. There are just too many reasons to name why Gunstar Heroes deserves the #05 spot on our count down, so I'll leave the cooperative play strategies and recurring boss battles to your imagination. You know you've got a good list of games when Gunstar Heroes is only #05. What could possibly top this 90's Contra killer? Say hello to #04, my boy Link. |
