The Wii may be the most debatable next-gen console, from the 12cm discs forgoing the ability to play DVD’s outright, to the Nunchuck controller. How will this system hold up in the coming months?

Expected Release Date: November 19th, 2006

Nintendo has never been one to follow the normal trends. Their objective has been to stand out and have their consumers take notice. Think about the DS. Every hand held console came with one screen standard. Here comes Nintendo with two. With the GameCube, every competitor goes DVD, they go 8cm disc. So, now as we look to the future for Nintendo, we have to look at the Wii. Will Nintendo’s trend of standing out take notice work again?

Before we go into Wii’s launch titles, let’s look at some of the things the Wii can do: First, it is not trying to target just gamers, like the PS3 and Xbox360. Imagine going to sleep while your game console stays awake and downloads the news and weather. That is just one plan with the WiiConnect24. Not just that, WiiConnect24 works with the Wii Channel to get you up to date information on new games and other information.

In all its glory, the Wii!

Speaking of the Wii Channel, every time you power up the system, you will be taken to a browser showing off games and information accessible to you.  The Wii will be your personal gaming network, allowing you to access 48 channels (able to add additional channels via increasing stored software). Channels can be your news or update channel, which was all downloaded while you slept. You also have the Disc channel, Picture channel, Mii Channel (allowing you to create your own Avatar) and the Shopping channel. So not only will the Wii come with its own selection of launch titles, but you will be able to download 20 years of classic games from NES to Sega Genesis, prices ranging from $5 to $10. Last but not least, you will be able to connect wirelessly to your DS increasingly more of the games to your Wii.
