#5, choose your character, then stage. and wait in the practice stage and it will find players. It usually puts you in games where people recently leave so just wait about 3 min since matches are always 2 min long.
Some multicolored orb floats onto the screen - you hit it several times (depends on how strong the attach you use it) and when you break it you start glowing. Hit B and you perform your Final Smash. Some knock you out of the board instantly, others do a hefty amount of damage or suck. I don't use items when playing Brawl.

btw, marth has the worst final smash if you aren't horizontal with an enemy you will fling yourself off the screen.
