Here's a little game that will turn your big world upside down. From the developers at Media Molecule.
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment So you've played alot of games, right? Games where you deal with aliens, demons, witches, zombies, and devil hunters. But what if you could play a game where you created your own levels and play around in it? No, don't get this confused with a SimCity review. This game review is for Little Big Planet on the Playstation 3. The Little Big Editor Little Big Planet is a game and possibly a sweet killer application for the Playstation 3 that gives the player the ability to create his own world or levels to play around with. Right now you're probably saying, "How am I able to create levels? I'm not a game designer!" Well, it's pretty simple, really. Everything you do is physics-based. From turning box-like objects you see in LBP you get to pick objects from a pullout menu called "Pop-it." The items used are not just physical items, but also basic level background/foreground design called "stickers." These "stickers" are photos taken from either Eye Toy, the PS3's hard drive, or any USB component that stores images. Within the game, the player can place an unlimited amount of stickers to their heart's content. After editing and creating their levels the player can choose whether or not he wants to upload his levels onto the game's worldwide server for others to play around and toy with along with online co-op/multiplayer. Talk about a next step in cutting edge technology and next-gen gaming. The Littlest Characters in a Big Game. In the game you control small characters called "Sackboys." Mainly the "sackboys" are used to participate in the levels the players create, but that's not all. They can also help out with the creation of the levels by moving around items and constructing level structures or buildings. It also gives players the opportunity to obtain new skills and tools. Reaction of the Gamers After it was unveiled at GDC 2007 it received positive reactions among gamers and the press alike. I mean, the idea of creating your own levels for a game would make any gamer excited. Though I've heard this kind of thing is a sign of the programmers being lazy, I mean besides it only pertaining to first person shooters and RPG Making systems it also goes for this. But if you ask me and a lot of other gamers, especially those who play Online FPS' and mods levels and junk, it's not laziness it actually gives gamers a chance to be in the developer's shoes and also have fun making the levels and weapons. But this right here is a new level of modding. This is modding a PS3 action platformer! From the Editor I really want this game. In fact as a person who admittedly wants to become a game designer I want to play this game to learn about base laying, level texture adding, and stuff like that. I've played around with other engine, especially the RPG Maker engines, but this is a whole different story. This is not just an engine. This is an engine game within a game's engine. 2008 will definitely be a great year for gamers, but mostly for gamers who plan on becoming game designers. If you wanna be a game designer and love modding or customizing your own levels and weapons, then this is your game! |
