Sony Playstation 3: PS3 Price Cuts on the Horizon?

By: Jason Krueger - Published February 02, 2007 at 8:43 AM EST - Writer Archive
Playstation 3 sales have been below projection and losses have been high. Is now the time to see a price cut on the Playstation 3?
According to an interview with the AP, Sony experienced a $455 million loss in its game division in 2006 and an overall loss of 5.3% in the company. Sony's Senior Vice President, Takao Yuhara, stated that the company could lose as much as $1.6 billion by the end of the fiscal year in March.

Recent news states that Sony is definitely anticipating price cuts on their Playstation 3, almost surely by next March, 2008 when their fiscal year ends.

The losses are starting to add up for Sony financially but this is a common thing in the following month and year or so after a console launch.

Could this be the answer to a less than stellar reception of the PS3? I personally believe it would take almost a $100 price cut to make it more competitive with the Wii and 360.

More news will be forthcoming on this topic, and a thank you goes to the GotFrag Hardware division for this piece.

Funny, nintendo isnt experiencing half a billion in losses for their new console. Infact I think they are making money off of every console. Good thing sony was willing to put a division of themselves on the line by shoving some "next-gen" dvd player in that sucker.

yeah #2 but you forget that in the end, the wii won't make nearly as much money as the 360/ps3 expect to...this is kind of like a basic algebra problem in 8th grade...

you either have a bunch of income now but never hit high numbers, or you steadily increase your profit, surpassing the first amount after x years

#3, who is to say that the Wii will not continue to sell well? While many serious gamers will ultimately buy a PS3 or 360, I think there is room in most households for a Wii also. Plus, the Wii is doing a great job of capturing multiple audiences.

I definitely will get a PS3 if they hack off $100.

lol more like hack off $200.. this year..

Wii's are STILL sold out everywhere around me in stores. So dam hard to get one. Best buys around here have boxes and boxes of 360's and ps3s laid out in the store.
hi

and who is 360 kidding.. 200 bucks for the hd dvd player, that makes their system the exact same price as ps3, $600.

#7 last I checked the HD-DVD drive isn't required to play Xbox 360 titles hence the 360 by no means costs the exact same price as the PS3 :)

The 360's HD-DVD drive is only for people interested in HD-DVD movies.

Sony can cut their prices all day long, but without any good games they won't sell many

I knew this was gonna happen. The PS3 is way too much and people arent willing to shell out that much money for one. The only people shelling out money for this thing are the die hard sony fanboys and the idiots who thought they could sell one on ebay for double or even triple the cost. I think I might get one after the price cut but then again I really dont like sony so probly not.

it will take a little more than $100 to get me to buy one. even though a new GTA and gran turismo would be amazing on it.

Makes sense. What they lose in money for the console, they will make up in licenses for games.

I might consider buying one at this or another price-cut-point.

Same goes for Wii, price cuts, and Ill consider buying...

actually for the 360 to compete with ps3 you have to buy the hd drive and the remote so you can use it...so the cost of the system will be at least as high if not higher

lol

but if you don't care about high-def video and full 1080p that is where ps3 has a little problem atm

why pay 200 when you can get the hd-dvd addon for around $183 with shipping. http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-9z5-0.. D:

only reason i don't have one is because it's so expensive -_-

When is the last time you bought an item that costed more to make, than you bought it for.... Only Micro$oft and Sony are wrapping bills around their consoles. Last time I checked, buying something for less than it cost to make it, was a good thing. I wish I could do the same thing for all the other appliances in my house. I'm not expecting a price cut soon. As others have said it, it takes one year for good titles to come out, then consoles will start selling by themselves. Only way for Sony to cut the price of the PS3 is if they manage to lower manufacturing price. (Cheaper cell processor is coming out soon. GPU will likely follow.)
