Sony has corrected issues with backwards capatability and the PS3 will now play PS2 games without problems.
The initial Playstation 3 release was rough in a few regards and nothing was a bigger issue among console owners than issue with playing PS2 games on the PS3. However, Sony has released firmware update 1.50 which corrects the issues of distorted text and images when playing Playstation 2 titles on the PS3.

Playstation 3 owners are also now able to upload pictures of themselves for their profile photos or game icon instead of the preloaded images. The ability to mute the sound caused by changing menus was included in the latest update. Sony has further strengthened its security settings as well. The ability to type in Korean was also added in the latest firmware update.

Included in the update are some exciting features for gamers in Japan. Japanese gamers will have the ability to purchase content for the PS3 via the EDY system. IGN reported rumors of potential future expansion for EDY transactions via cell phones, as well.
