Sony Playstation 3: PS3 Passes 2 Million Shipped

Following a shaky start in the United States, Sony is picking up steam in other markets.
According to a release by IGN, Sony has now shipped a combined 2 million of its Playstation 3 consoles to the United States and Japan. While Japanese shipment numbers had been reported to be below 500,000 according to Market Watch and closer to 570,000 according to VGCharts, Sony has said that its shipments have doubled in the past two weeks and numbers are closer to 1,000,000 Japanese units. The report includes a software sale of 5,000,000 game titles thus far between the United States and Japan.

While Sony did not release any official numbers, Japanese consumers have favored the 60GB model as well, and Resistance: Fall of Man appears to be the favorite title as well.

Also according to the article, 500,000 users have registered on The Playstation Network, of which some 300,000 have downloaded the free Gran Turismo HD Concept demo.

While this sudden rush of sales is great news for Sony, it does come a couple weeks beyond their expected deadline of 1 million PS3s sold in Japan by the start of 2007.
