Information has come from Sony stating that every PS3 will have the PS2 chipset also for the forseeable future until a full fledged software emulator is ready.

Whether or not this is part of the reasons associated with the high price of the PS3 is unknown. So we may potentially see a drop in cost and maybe price of the PS3 once the emulator is finished.
