I know I will be flamed by many kids believing that they know more than I do on the following subject. Some of you may, but for the rest of you; PLEASE READ AND CONSIDER MY POST INTELLIGENTLY! For the sake of argumentation, let us acknowledge that there is a difference between hardware and software. My question is this: What is the future for SONY in Gaming and Media? From my personal opinion, the Playstation 3 has been a let down. It seems that I have yet to recieve my money's worth. This far down the road since its launch date, one would expect a diverse library of HD-Video trailers, Game Demos, Bonus-Packs, Community support, ETC. The playstation store is lacking and boring. We can see effort in improvement from the periodic system updates and the more recent playstation store GUI renovation. Such necessary and yet simple updates are not enough to convince me that SONY still has their act together.
We saw with the Playstation 2 that consumers simply were not ready for the HDD add-on. Such early developments enable one to see the capabilities a company can come to. Being early last generation has caused SONY to be late on this generation. HOME is SONY's biggest attack against Microsoft and Nintendo, and if it underperforms, then people might begin to see that the reason why SONY was late was simply to bring out Blue-ray to the market and not so much gaming. This may be proven through the numerous former SONY exclusive publishers' releases of now multiplatform games. Microsoft's recent partnership with Netflix only shows how much more difficult it will be for SONY to be the contender of this console generation. SONY knows consumers and understands that the future of video game consoles is beyond simply gaming and more directed towards being the center HUBs of entertainment. Microsoft and Nintendo are not too far behind such comprehension.
HOME may be what causes victory for SONY, or its demise. We may speculate from the several delays Home's release has undergone that it will probably satisfy customers and might possibly be the incentive to attract new ones. We have seen a market boost following the exclusive release of MGS4. Will consumers regret their purchase? Outstanding exclusive video game releases can be a good distraction for console makers as they are able to have a few more weeks of development time. So, in time we shall see a grand company fail in the eyes of two other companies, or astonish and become the leader for the third time.

You know HOME already looks pretty awesome. It can be delayed till its perfection, I don't care. You release it too early and with the inevitable bugs that will appear, people will cast out HOME like it was Superman for the 64. Like the devolpers say, they still have yet to tap PS3's potential. In due time, there will be games that will make you ejaculate instantly. (just like TDK)
Playstation 3 for the first time is now outselling and outshipping more consoles worldwide than the x360, but still falls short of the wii. The wii has failed to ship enough consoles to meet demand and may cause its downfall. There was another price cut for the ps3 and one can only predict even more consoles sold. I believe the 360 will look outdated within the next 2 years.

#6, i used to think like you but they're just not simply worth shelling out all that money when i can just find a friend who has them and play them there. maybe if they had online and it was a completely different experience i might, but with the recent ff13 coming to 360, there's just no telling what other games will follow.
you're speculating on a program that will close the gap between the ps3 and the 360 as an integrated media centers. what makes you think m$ will sit on their laurels in one of their fastest growing and profitable markets? they are software developers...
i am very unexcited about home. i would rather hear about gow3 and whatever follows SotC instead of how the ps3 will catch up to and perhaps surpass the 360 (and then m$ works to one-up sony, etc.). what's at the heart of consoles? games. it's an added bonus the 360 offers more but i still spend all my time on it playing games.
$ony shot themselves in the foot when they announced they would not pay for exclusives. gta3 was the single biggest reason the ps2 dominated the xbox.

Games are probably the most relevant factor for which consoles do better. Sony is losing big time in games. All they have really are MGS4 and maybe a few others (like little big planet).
The future of games is multiplayer. Single player games originally were made because of technical limitations on multiplayer. Besides story based games, most games need to have good multiplayer to have longevity (players like longevity). XBox Live is seriously one of the best things in the gaming world (for consoles at least) in the past decade. If a game comes out on both PS3 and 360, XBL by itself is enough to push the game in favor of the 360. Note that I won't even talk about the Wii because it's a gimmick and a novelty toy more than a gaming system.
Sony is simply too cocky and stuck in the past to realize that the future is multiplayer and not the single player blockbusters of the past. And yes, XBL > PSN.
#24 I hardly think any of the points/opinions you are hypothesizing about Sony not being the majority shareholder of the console industry are true. You are also very biased. Consumers hear and see the console as a multi-medi hub with a blue-ray player as well. The fact of the matter is EA (Electronic Arts) stated this year the Playstation 3 will outsell the 360 (but not take over). And they are right, the system is being shipped at rates not seen by its competitors. Also one has to weight in the fact that the economy is in the toilet and cannont afford a higher-end system. But even with the down turn in the economy(s) they are outselling their opponent Microsoft. Also, key developers are taking the fullest advantage of the consoles 8 CELL Processors. I think you are wrong, sir, and will become very dissatisfied with the 360 in the recent years to come.

Personally, I think consoles just suck for gaming. I prefer PC gaming, but if I were to take a side it would be XBox. I honestly think Sony is going to lose this generation and lose even more next generation. They will continually lose to both Microsoft and Nintendo. Microsoft understands a bit better how to manage communities. You want to talk about media? Xbox 360 can be like an extension to your computer. You can listen to your music, watch movies, rent movies (netflix), and do all of this with ease. They are streamlining their community efforts, such as zune, XBL, Windows Live, etc. Nintendo has found its niche. When it realized that it was not prepared to offer up gaming related entertainment in ways that the PS2 and Xbox were, it decided to become more of a toy (it was always meant for a younger crowd). The Wii isn't about traditional games, it is about having some "wholesome" fun for a couple of minutes, possibly with a group.
I think there are more forces than just Playstation, Nintendo, and XBox at work here. Playstation is backed by Sony, who is pretty much just pumping out hardware, while XBox has Microsoft, which is much more in tune with what people actually do with the technology.
