But am I surprised at the prospect that MGS4 could be a victim of overhype, along with the realization that Hideo Kojima's MGS games are also incredibly overrated (albeit not quite so much as Halo)?
Not at all. I've been saying that for years, ever since MGS2.

That 9.9 is jokes. They just couldn't give it a 10 and yet somehow Halo3 and GTA4 got 10's.
I have no doubt in my mind that i'll enjoy the single player of MGS4 much more than H3(lol not much to brag about). GTA4's single player was great but had some really annoying flaws and glitches.
#23 it did so well just by being named Halo and by having a pretty good multiplayer. The first Halo was the only one with a good single player. I don't even have a PS3, but I refuse to believe H3 is better than MGS4, <insert hype>
H3 sold big, because Halo is a massive franchise that millions of people like. I love the Halo games, and think the MGS games suck horribly, that's my preference.
H3 has a huge advantage over every console game except COD4 in multiplayer, that's why it go such rave reviews, plus all the added features, and replay value of it. More people play the Halo games online for consoles then any other game i would bet.

If H3 sucks so bad, how did it manage to shatter sale records when it came out? The Halo franchise was Epic, and very important to FPS on consoles.
