Madden Home: Netflix to 360/PS3?

By: Robert Rodriguez - Published February 12, 2008 at 2:25 PM EST - Writer Archive
Rumors are circulating that Netflix, a leader in movie-by-mail distribution, may be considering a movie service on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Engadget reported yesterday that Netflix may be interested in supplying us console owners with a streaming movie service, diminishing the middle man (in this case, the Post Office). A survey, which asked Netflix subscribers and future subscribers to the service, "If as part of your Netflix membership you could instantly watch movies and TV episodes on your TV with your PS/3 or XBOX 360, how likely would you/anyone in your household be to do that?", made its rounds on the interwebs, stirring up some commotion amongst console owners.

The proposed plan, according to the survey, will allow you - the console owner - to stream movies through a Netflix disc, which would go for a one time charge of $3. After said disc is purchased, that's it, endless movies at your grasp with absolutely no extra fees.

Engadget points out that no word has been mentioned about how Sony would handle the Microsoft-based DRM, but again, this is just one of those too-good-to-be-true rumors.

How about you, Sony and Microsoft fanatics, would you subscribe to a console-based Netflix service? Could it interfere with Microsoft's reputable collection of movies that already exist on the Marketplace?
