Warm weather and hot competition are signs that the calendar has turned to June. The newest chapter in the 2007 MLG season is set to begin June 8 in New Jersey at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus. As always, Halo dominates the talk around MLG, the parent company of GotFrag.com, but it should be mentioned that a new game tournament will also be held as Gears of War makes its official MLG tournament debut. With all the excitement that the Halo competition is bringing, it is easy to overlook the newer tournaments. I was given the opportunity to watch some of the competition at the MLG Charlotte Rainbow Six: Vegas and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of interest it could produce for crowds. Certainly in time, these games may make their way to the main stage of the MLG event, but of course right now the big dog is Halo. That big dog has gotten even bigger in the past few events spanning back to the 2006 season. It was team Carbon who was crowned champion in 2006 only to have the opening event of the 2007 slip away as they took an early loss but were able to fight back to the finals. It will be Carbon’s ability to bounce back from that defeat when it comes time for New Jersey. With that said, let’s look at what can be expected at the MLG New Jersey event. Final Boss former dominant champions and still a beast of a team Projected 1st-2nd After last year’s roster change it was speculated by many of whether or not this team could continue with their run of success. While it was only a single player change, many people doubted Final Boss’ newest addition Michael “Strongside” Cavanaugh. The MLG Charlotte event certainly took some of the wind out of that speculation as Final Boss had a superb tournament with Cavanaugh playing very well. Now, the pressure is on to continue their success. My thoughts are that this team knows what it takes, and with a new player or not, they have a serious backbone of very skilled players. Final Boss will put into this game what it takes to win another championship. Carbon first team to ever knock Final Boss off the throne Projected 1st-2nd Carbon came out flat during parts of the MLG Charlotte tournament, but what seemed like a problem early on became a sense of wonder as Carbon showed tremendous heart and determination coming through the lower bracket to get into the Grand Finals. While they lost to Final Boss, it was still interesting to see this team take a hit early but keep on doing what it took to win. Falling early again into the lower bracket may be a fatal mistake, but if Carbon is able to gain some steam early at the tournament in New Jersey, look for them to make a serious run for the top spot.
