Madden Home: Kasumi Chan PMS and PMS Vanessa Interview

By: JP McDaniel - Published April 03, 2007 at 2:01 AM EDT - Writer Archive
JP "Moogle" McDaniel had time this weekend at the Buy.com LAN 2007 event to sit down with Majorie "Kasumi Chan PMS" Bartell and Vanessa "PMS Vanessa" Arteaga.

First off, let’s start by introducing yourselves.

Kasumi: My name is Majorie "Kasumi Chan PMS" Bartell and I am leader of the Dead or Alive 4 division in PMS. I play the character Kasumi ingame. I used to play games such as Sonic and things as a child so I grew into playing Dead or Alive 4 naturally.

PMS Vanessa: I am Vanessa "PMS Vanessa" Arteaga and I’ve been playing video games since I was five-years-old. I play the character Hitomi. The first game I played was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with my brother when I was little.

You both have participated in the Dead or Alive 4 competitive arena for quite sometime. How is it being in a male-dominated sport?

Kasumi: It’s always an awesome experience and when you actually do win; its almost like a big upset. It is awesome beating someone with manicured nails. However, the guys mostly respect us a lot so we don’t have a problem with the other player’s attitudes and everyone gets along really well with each other.

Both of you placed third in Tournament 1 and 2 on Saturday. Do you believe you can easily win a spot on Sunday’s tournaments with four of the top competitors gone?

Both: Easily, without a problem. We’ll get it for sure.

Dead or Alive 4 is only supported by two major tournaments at the moment. If you were selling the game to someone who has never seen or played it before what would you say to them?

Kasumi: I would say that it is a really great game to people who have never played it before or seen it.

PMS Vanessa: It's just really fun and anyone can pick it up and know whats going on.

Kasumi: Yes, that and its really pretty and shiny (laughs). The flashy moves and unique fighting styles of each character make the game very enjoyable to watch.

Do you guys have a daily practice regiment? If so what does it include?

Kasumi: We play whatever we can really, but the PMS division has two practices a week and everyone tries to put in eight to nine hours on their own time.

Do the somewhat “charismatic” attitudes of some of the other competitors ever affect you or do you use it to fuel your gameplay?

Kasumi: For me, sometimes it makes me nervous, but other times it fuels my gameplay; it depends what mood I'm in to be honest.

PMS Vanessa: It definitely fuels my gameplay because their energy and hype rubs off on me and gets me extra pumped.

It’s been rumored that PMS is getting a house and a reality show, can you confirm or deny this?

Both: It’s all in the works, but that’s about all we can say.

How was the Buy.com experience?

Both: It was very well run, but not having chairs and the lack of space was kind of a pain because we never had a place to sit. The players were the ones holding the tournament from running on time.
