Madden Home: RRX: The New BXR?

The discovery of the double shot, commonly referred to as RRX, has a lot of potential in tournament play. As players increasingly become more effective at performing it, could it become as widespread as the famous BXR?

Since Halo 2's release, many fans had been filled with disappointment, as the game did not feel like the original. Many argued that the biggest problems were the weak melees and grenades. Bungie heard our cries and in response they released a patch in April of 2005. Fixes included the Battle Rifle’s accuracy, some weapons' balance issues, and making the grenades stronger and with a shorter fuse. But the most noticeable change was the strengthening of melees. Out of this came the discovery of BXR, essentially an instant kill. To perform a BXR, the player is required to be in close proximity of his or her opponent. The B, a melee, is given first followed by X, a cancellation upon melee connection, and the low shield of the opponent allows one headshot, or R, from the Battle Rifle to instantly kill the opponent at default shields. Since then, the BXR has become the most common weapon glitch used to take down an opponent due to its ease of use and effectiveness.

There has been a change occurring in the competitive Halo 2 scene over the past few months. The most difficult glitch to execute known as the double shot, or RRX, is quickly becoming the new novelty among top players. However, this is more than just a novelty; it will soon be as common as the BXR.

Performing the RRX is extremely complicated. To successully execute the move, you must press R twice in quick succession. It must be pressed twice before the first Battle Rifle burst is done. Finally, X must be pressed immediately after the second R and like both R's, before the first burst is done. If done correctly, you will notice two bursts fired extremely quickly. The main drawback is your weapon will reload and you cannot fire until it is done reloading. You may melee but you cannot cancel it because your weapon is not full.

What is the solution to this? A double tap, also known as YY, will let you quickly switch back to your battle rifle and allow you to fire instantly. However, this requires a secondary weapon. The current MLG game types do not have a starting secondary weapon so players will need to adapt to picking up another weapon to allow for a higher margin of error while performing the glitch. The secondary weapon allows you to switch to that weapon or switch back to your battle rifle without waiting through the reload.

Another drawback is the difficulty in aiming. Just like many other glitches, RRX requires your thumb to leave the right analog stick, which is commonly used for aiming. Because many of the shots are at farther distances than BXR shots, you should claw if you wish to be effective with the double shot.

Despite its many drawbacks, the double shot is a new tool for Halo 2 players everywhere. The demand to perform glitches effectively and flawlessly is becoming a new standard in competition. As such, players are counting on the versatility of the RRX to give them that extra edge in Battle Rifle duels and many other situations..
