Madden Home: Miyamoto Wanted "Revolution" Too

By: David Light - Published May 27, 2006 at 5:32 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Over on CNNMoney.com, Chris Morris prods the mind of the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto to find out that even he was a bit apprehensive towards Nintendo's new system name at first. Miyamoto even had a few blunt words to say regarding Sony and its surprisingly similar motion sensitive technology.

When you're speaking of the man behind three of the most beloved gaming franchises in Nintendo history (Mario, Zelda & Donkey Kong), you would expect a highly creative and somewhat quirky name such as "Wii" to fit beautifully in his mind the first time around; not so for Shigeru Miyamoto, as an interview with CNNMoney would reveal.

"When we first thought about it, myself and others felt that the [code] name Revolution was very appropriate to what we were doing," said Miyamoto, "but [Revolution] is a name that was almost threatening to non-gamers. It wasn't acceptable. So we thought this was more friendly and inviting." While such a statement isn't exactly negative, it does quietly hint that Wii was not his first choice.

According to CNNMoney, Miyamoto had upwards of 6 months to adjust to the new name before it went public back in April of 2006. But that isn't the only thing he has had to adjust to. In a surprisingly candid interview he would go on to reveal that he is also used to the replication of Nintendo's ideas (in reference to Sony's newly announced Wii-like motion sensitive controller), yet, it doesn't shake him.

"That always seems to happen and we kind of expected it. It reinforces for us that we've been on the right path all along," Miyamoto would explain. "We've gotten used to others copying what we do – and we're having a lot of fun with it. ... On the flipside, I suppose they must be worried about any other functionality we may announce."

This blunt statement by Nintendo's all-star staff member more than subtly implies that the similarities between Nintendo and Sony's ideas over the years are hardly coincidental, which will no doubt further fuel the rivalry between Sony and Nintendo, at least for the fans.
