what console is the best out there right now? i come from the n64/ps1 era.. have played pc games far too long but want to get a console, any suggestions?
If you are competitive, go for the 360. Games like Halo and Gears are (im assuming) big in the console gaming community. If you like fighting games, go for the PS3 or wii.
Ps3 has Tekken along with street fighter and soul calibur (sf/sc are also on 360). I also hear Blazblu (from Guilty Gear fame) is going to be a PS3 exclusive.
Wii has SSBB and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom will be exclusive to it.
But this is all for competitive gaming. I have a 360 and I like it, but I don't really use it. I don't think i'd find any much more use for the ps3 neither aside from MGS4. You may like LBP, i hear it's amazing. The wii is quite fun and the games on it are played differently b/c of the controller obviously, but most of my friends rarely play it and if they do they use it to play gamecube games.
PS3 if you have a nice home theater and are more concerned about purchasing future games. XBOX 360 if you are more concerned with buying their current library of games.
Both consoles (xbox 360 and PS3) have a future, anyone who says anything different is obviously a PS3 fanboy. Also there has yet to be a game released for both consoles that looks noticeably better on the PS3. So yes exclusives (MGS4) looks great, but when a game is released on both consoles, you basically are getting the same visual experience.
There are a few things to look at;
What do your friends play? If you have a lot of friends with xbox 360, then get that because then you'll be able to play with them on xbox live. Same goes with if you have friends who own a PS3, then get that.
Is Blu-Ray important to you? Blu-ray is cool, no doubt. But regular DVD still owns the market by a huge margin, especially with how easy and cheap it is to burn/rip DVD's. It's still nice to have a few of your favorite movies in High Definition.
Is price important? The xbox 360 is cheaper than the PS3. Also the xbox 360 has a lot of great games that have been out for a while, so they are around $20 - $30 each. But you get the Blu-Ray player with a PS3, and that's a great value.
What console has the exclusives you want? Just look at each consoles exclusives, currently released and coming soon. Both consoles have great exclusives, you just need to figure out which games you want more.
FPS on consoles are great if you can play them. If you can't use the control to aim, then they suck.
Again, it's all personal preference. Both consoles are great, and offer different things for different people. Personally I love my xbox 360. The game library is great, and I'm really looking forward to the xbox 360 exclusives that are coming out soon. The biggest factor for me is friends. I have about 30 friends that own xbox 360's, which is great playing with them on xbox live. Especially NHL 09, it's epic. And I have 5 friends with PS3's, so if I were buying a console today, I would easily go for the xbox 360. Although I am planning on purchasing a PS3 in the future.
ps3, cause gran turismo 5 in HD looks amazing. amazing. 360 is the best for shooters, its not hard to aim unless your retarded, its just different than a mouse. wii if you play with other people a lot. its actually pretty fun for a while at least
joystick are terrible for fps, absolutly terrible. Its funny cause all I hear from console fan boys is that they hate computer fps, but they never really played one. I used to play halo2 and the game is ok but you just feel so restricted with aim it becomes really fustrating. Its like going from driving indy cars to riding a big wheel.
i was also wondering this i was leaning towards xbox 360 because it's really cheap now, pgr, gta 4 and a big catalogue of really decent games that arent too expensive. ps3 is still pretty expensive and imo bar mgs4 it doesnt sport any fantastic titles. wii has ssb, and games fun with friends like mario kart but again imo its really gimmicky and doesnt have many quality games
I had the same problem you did about a year ago. I ended up quitting 1.6. I ended up getting a ps3 because i played rpgs mainly. PS and PS2 were the RPG systems. I figured that the PS3 would follow suit, which unfortunately it hasn't. I do not regret the purchase though because of MGS4, Soul Calibur 4, and the fact that I have a backwards compatible ps3 so i can catch up on those ps/ps2 games that i missed.
I love my ps3, although I will get a 360 eventually. It boils down to what games you want to play. 360 has been out a year longer than the ps3 and they have more games. The 360 has hit close to its graphical peak, ps3 has not. From a hardware standpoint the ps3 is superior, but game wise at the moment the 360 has the trophy.
look at the games that you like and do some research on which system has the games that you want to play. PS3 can play some of your old ps games if you have any left over that you want to play for nostalgia purpose.
#18, i just bought tony hawk 1 for ps for that reason. 66 cents =p
#12 people argue that all the time, i don't really see the problem. i've played 1.6 for entirely too long, but still don't get frustrated playing console games. yes its different, but its just that. not bad necessarily. i prefer aiming with a mouse, but joysticks aren't that awful. cod4 and halo are still fine
fps on console is only a joke to pc fps players who fail to adjust (they expect to instantly dominate and refuse to give themselves any real time to get good). if you're good with a controller, fps games like gow/halo3/cod4 are lots of fun.
no. i'm not bad at console FPS (see my CoD4 ratio/killstreak on XBL) but clearly a controller is weaker to aim with because every single console FPS has auto aim out the ass. yes, even CoD4. if you don't have a good enough PC console FPS is OK but if you can run it on your PC, don't even bother with a 360/PS3 FPS.
btw halo and gears are both awful. rent before you buy or you will be xXxrAgEdxXx
so far this gen the 360 is the rpg system of choice. XBL is better than PSN. PS3 has bluray and slightly better graphics in the longrun. Most multiplatform games run best on 360(lol ps3 bioshock), though it's coming to a halt. like others have said go with what your friends have, you won't be dissapointed with either.
if you like entertainment in general.... 360... netflix coming.. xbox live isnt a joke like ps3s online experience. most developers release for 360 or both but hardly vise versa due to the lacking amount of ps3s. bluray isnt a reason to buy a ps3 seeing as the online market is almost dominant thanks to netflix streaming and other iptv sources.
#27 Yeah seriously. I don't see any reason why it should stay on the Wii/arcades alone, but that's all I found from various sites. ;\
Shame because I don't really like the Wii. All their so-called top games aren't that fun to play. Maybe I just haven't gotten used to it, but I don't like their games (except TP, but thats on gamecube) very much. Wouldn't want to spend 250 just to play a cool fighter.
BUTTTT..
knowing capcom, they will probably end up bringing it to all 3 major consoles
PS3: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 5 (recently announced), LittleBigPlanet, Final Fantasy 7 (unconfirmed)
Xbox 360: Star Ocean 4, Final Fantasy XIII (recently announced)
Oh ok #33. I was just confused because he didn't mention any of the big exclusives for the xbox 360. I think it's just a list of what he is looking forward to.
#37 how am i a year late.. november will bring netflix to 360 while ps3 has divx streaming but no XviD or mkv. ps3s media is terrid. 360 supports x264 mp4 xvid and divx and soon netflix. whilist having the heavier game list with essentially the same graphics and HD quality. sounds like a no brainer to me. and apart from my rant yes i owned a ps2 and loved it.. but ps3 just seriously dropped the ball.
cant decide on a console

PStripple if you like fighting games/sports games and have an HDTV
used to have both then i just sold my 360 and haven't really missed it except for playing 3s online.
Wii is garbage.

LOLWAT
i mean i have COD4 and Resistance, and i would die to have a freakin mouse.
but i guess its fair cause everyone is terrible @ shooting with the controller. you just have to be the least worse of all.

Wii: Zelda, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart
I know he's not naming big exclusives for each console... anyone know?
360 = worth the money in every aspect
PS3 = paperweight
