7-Zip (except for the file Rar29.dll) is a free software distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License. The file Rar29.dll is under mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restriction (the unRAR sources cannot be used to re-create the RAR compression algorithm, which is proprietary).

I don't know why people are posting that Winrar is better than this. 7z is almost guaranteed to compress more than a rar at any strength, and typically compresses/decompresses faster than Winrar when compressed using 'Fast'. Let's not forget that Winrar is also not free, not open source, does NOT support external plugins, and is NOT cross platform.
lol #11, I remember that program used to be on all the macs at my high school. Everyone thought it was crap because it was on a mac. #8, who are you trying to impress? People are still going to have their own preferences regardless of whether it's better or not. If that were the case, everyone would be running redhat now.
So I'm guessing it's only useful for people who need to compress stuff, and if they really need to compress it that bad, then they should already know about this o_O?
