After much speculation that involved several star athletes, Brett Favre has been named to the cover of Madden NFL 09.
While it may not compare with his two consecutive MVP awards or a Super Bowl Championship, Brett Favre has one more distinction to add to his long list of accolades, a Madden NFL cover.
Does the Madden Curse count if the player retires?

For the game in its 20th installment, Madden NFL is the most successful sports franchise in gaming and owns exclusive rights to the NFL players, teams and logos for gaming.

In previous releases, the athlete residing on the cover has suffered declined numbers speculated to be a result of the Madden Curse. Brett Favre will certainly see the greatest decline in his statistics as he has officially retired from the NFL.

Other athletes speculated to be on the cover were Minnesota Vikings Running Back Adrian Peterson, New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady and Wide Receiver Randy Moss, and also Chicago Bears Return Specialist and Wide Receiver Devin Hester. While all would have been suitable selections, Favre made the biggest splash this season with his resurgence to his dominant form from his early years in his career and the announcement of his retirement.

Previous stars to cover on Madden NFL include Vince Young (2008), Shaun Alexander (2007) and many others.

Brett Favre was also on the cover of NFL Quarterback Club in the 90s and enjoyed a 16-year NFL career primarily with the Green Bay Packers after being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons.

There will be much more news surrounding Madden NFL 09 now that the cover announcement has been made. Other topics will include announcements about formation audibles, slide protection, smart routes and other topics for the 09 release. Keep checking back to GotFrag Madden for the latest.
