Madden NFL 08: Patriots vs Chargers

By: Jayson Bussa - Published December 04, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST - Writer Archive
Madden competitors are falling almost exclusively into two groups - those that use the Patriots, and those that use the Chargers. Jayson Bussa, with the help of a Madden pro, discusses why these teams are used, and which has the advantage going head-to-head.

It’s no mystery at this point in the Madden Challenge season which two teams are hot: the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers. While a few other competitors brought such teams as the Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles and even the Detroit Lions to the forefront of competition, the reality of it is that 85% of the Madden Challenge winners used one of the two famed teams. To get a better idea of what is so great about these two teams, and which is the greater squad, we brought in Madden Challenge online qualifier Dan “Truth” Brown to enlighten our readers. Truth will be wielding the New England Patriots while in action at the Madden Challenge Finals in Los Angeles on Dec. 11-13.

Truth on New England’s strengths
I think the Patriots are the best team because, in a clutch game, you need to have Tom Brady make those throws. The Patriots’ strengths are quite simple: offense, all-around offense. With the bomb glitch in affect, the Patriots are the best team at the end of the day.

Truth on New England’s weaknesses
They are kind of weak in the running area. Aside from that, they also lack defense, which is something that the Chargers are quite a bit better at.

Truth on San Diego’s strengths
The Chargers were the heavy favorite at the beginning of the year, but now, most of the Madden players have run other defenses and can make stops. The Chargers still have a really strong defense with the best two defensive players at their positions: Shawne Merriman and Antonio Cromartie. The Chargers have a lot better defense.

Truth on San Diego’s weaknesses
The Chargers are weak on offense, even with LaDainian Tomlinson. If someone stops your running game, then you can count on quarterback Phil Rivers to make a horrible throw or wide receiver Malcom Floyd to drop a big third down pass.

There it is; the Pats carry the Truth stamp of approval, and with good reason. The New England offense is anchored by Tom Brady who is nearly perfect at everything but speed. He totes 98 awareness, 92 throwing power and 96 throwing accuracy. As long as a gamer sticks to their passing game and doesn’t try to bootleg this snail out wide, they will be in good shape. With Randy Moss (Deep Threat, Speed, Spectacular Catch weapons holder) centered as Brady’s target, the Patriots have strong protection up front, especially on the left side of the formation with Matt Light. If they sag anywhere on the line it would be on the right with 79 overall Nick Kaczur.

In a Challenge that has been dominated by passing, there is no logical reason a gamer would choose San Diego quarterback Phil Rivers over Brady, even though he is a precision passer. With a slew of mediocre wide receivers, the Chargers were made to run with an offensive line filled with guys with 90+ overall talent.
