Nintendo DS: DS Lite Hits Big In USA

As sales numbers come in from Nintendo, it's becoming more and more clear that finding a DS Lite may not be so easy for everyone.

Just two days after its release in the United States, Nintendo's latest DS incarnation, the DS Lite sold more than 136,500 units. So what does this mean? According to Nintendo, the "DS Lite is outpacing 2003's launch sales of Nintendo's juggernaut Game Boy® Advance SP by more than 12 percent." Assumedly due largely in part to the launch of the DS Lite, reports have also come in to reveal that sales of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day tripled over the previous week while that of the New Super Mario Bros. doubled.

The New Super Mario Bros. may sound familiar, as it should. The game recently broke records in Japan when it sold over 480,000 units in its first day, maxing out at nearly a million in its first week, thus becoming one of the biggest portable software accomplishments since the Brain Age series.

Something a bit less known about the launch day of the DS Lite was the portable system's participation in a Pediatric Aids Benefit with celebrities like Kobe Bryant, Seth Green and Tony Hawk. During the benefit, kids were able to play the otherwise unfindable DS Lite with the comfort of a new celeb every hour in the DS Lite lounge.
