Nintendo DS: Record Week For New Super Mario Bros.

Released on May 25th, 2006 in Japan the NEW Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS has already sold an unparalleled number of copies.

According to Media Create's sales figures, Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS became the fastest selling piece of software to hit the Japanese market last week. In just its first day of sale, NSMB sold over 480,000 copies and within a week almost doubled that number to 899,518. It should also be made of note that Nintendo initially only shipped just under 900,000 copies of the New Super Mario Bros. to retailers, and had more been made available it wouldn't be too far fetched to assume the title would have broken the one million units sold mark in its first week.

To give everyone a better understanding of just how far ahead of the game the New Super Mario Bros. seems to be, let's compare figures with its closest newly released competitor. Sitting at number four on the charts is Square Enix's Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable for the PSP. In its first week of sales, Square Enix's title managed 48,342 units sold, which is just under six percent of the sales generated by NSMB. In fact, in order to even be held in the same breath as Nintendo's new money maker one would have to add together every other title in the top ten grossing list for the week, and then double it. Sounds insane doesn't it? That's because it is. Word on the street is also that DS sales saw a large boom with the release of NSMB, but that has yet to be confirmed.
